Technical:
Directory synchronizing tool IDEM works on Windows 95/98/ME/NT/XP/2000 systems Which Operating Systems are supported?
Idem runs as an application on Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT4/ 2000/ 2003/Windows XP and also as a Windows service on these platforms.
Mirror server units on different servers with Idem Can I mirror folders that are in another server domain?
Yes, Idem can mirror across other server domains if it runs using an account that have the permissions to access them.

Can Idem work over any type of connection between two computers to clone folders?
Yes, if from the machine where Idem is installed you can reach the folder on the other machine with your Windows Explorer  and manually copy/move/suppress files between the two computers, then you should have no problems synchronizing the folders trees with Idem.
Can Idem replicate ACLs (Access Control Lists - NTFS Rights)?
Yes . Idem can also replicate files and folders security information and attributes. You can choose to sync permissions or not.
Does Idem synchronize Macintosh files on Windows NTFS volumes?
Yes . Idem synchronizes Mac files on Windows volumes and can even optionnaly replace with a dash the Windows forbidden characters in Mac filenames when moving Mac files
Is it possible to synchronize files with special Unicode characters in filenames?
Yes . Idem does the synchronization of files named with special Unicode characters like Chinese and Korean names, - supports Double Byte Character Sets i.e. Japanese.

Can I do a mirror with a Linux PC?
Yes. Idem can create backup copies of Windows directories toward a Linux PC using a WinNT emulator.

Is it possible to stop/start Idem from a batch file?

Yes . Just check the following options in Configuration menu:
- Automatic start up
- Stop program after the first mirroring operation

Now in a batch file type the command: call Idem.exe

If you want to manage different set of parameters, save the 2 files Idem.ini and Idem.w (for example as Idem1.ini and Idem1.w for a first set of parameters, and Idem2.ini and Idem2.w for a second set of parameters). Then in the batch file:

' running Idem with the first set of parameters
copy Idem1.ini Idem.ini
copy Idem1.w Idem.w
call Idem.exe
' running Idem with the second set of parameters
copy Idem2.ini Idem.ini
copy Idem2.w Idem.w
call Idem.exe

Another alternative : Idem can run as a Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP service.

How to run Idem as a Windows NT or Windows 2000 or Windows XP service ?

To install the Idem Windows service:
a) Run Idem and configure your source-destination folders, set menu Log active if you whish a daily report of list of files processed.
b) Check Automatic Startup in menu Configuration
c) Use menu Configuration and Install Idem as a Service.
d) to run the Idem Service, ensure that you follow above considerations about Windows and account rights.

If you use it as a service verify the following points:

- do not allow interaction with the desktop
- run it using a true account with the appropriate rights (something like 'Administrator'). Do not use the default 'LocalSystem' account. This is necessary to be able to replicate files out of the NT box (and this is not our conditions but Microsoft's...)

See the following articles for more information.

When used as a service you can start and stop it using a standard start and stop commands of Windows NT. These commands can be included in the standard Windows NT scheduler : AT or WINAT if you have the NT Resource Kit .

Can Idem be set up for scheduling starting at a certain time using an external scheduler ?
Yes, of course you just need to set up the options before the scheduler runs Idem.exe.
In this case you must configure it with the " automatic start up" option in the configuration menu : when the scheduler launch it, idem will start the mirroring of the folders.
You can also define if it runs one time, checking option "stop program after the first mirroring operation". If you need a permanent mirroring leave this options unchecked.

What's new in Idem v2.2?

Current release is v2.2i :
- You can now display locked files that were not copied during the last mirroring cycle using menu Configuration / Display locked files (F3).
- When 'Record files and folders names in Log files' is set in menu 'Logs/Archive mirroring operations in Log files' menu, locked files are recorded in Log.

................ Bugs fixed:
- When running Idem for a long period, reserved handlers were not always correctly released, leading to abnormal increasing of memory and unexpected crash due to memory leak.
- More robust test to check locked files before copying them. Before this fix, most locked files - opened Word documents for example -were correctly detected and not copied. But some other locked files - like Outlook.pst when Outlook is running - were not properly detected. This has been fixed and improved

Features
Does Idem compare & synchronize sub folders?
Yes, Idem lets you decide if you compare and synchronize subfolders or just replicate/move selected folders.
Can Idem remove empty orphan subfolders on target location when synchronizing 2 folders?
Yes, Idem can delete an empty target subfolder with option "remove old files on target folder";
just be carefull when adding symmetric bi-directional replication (source folder A to target B followed by B to A ) don't use it for this couple of source target A-->B-->A.
Can Idem replicate opened files ?
You can use Idem + Open File Handler to replicate opened files. You must:
- run Idem and OFH on the same machine
- define the local drive(s) monitored by OFH: C:, D:, etc
note: OFH cannot manage attached/network drives
- define source folder in Idem using local drives letters (C:, D:, etc.).
when running Idem with OFH, you cannot use UNC convention such \\Server\Share\folder because OFH monitors only local drives.
Does Idem lock files or directories when it is mirroring?
No, Idem does not lock any file or directory.
Is it possible to know the list of files and folders synchronized by Idem?
Yes, of course you can set up Idem log active to create daily reports with filenames delete/moved/replicated.
