A software to replicate directories and synchronize files, backup documents or distribute data automatically , mirroring important folders from a Windows NT/W2K/XP server toward another, checking a list of source folders at regular time intervals and updating target folders with new or modified files including sub-directories.

Idem can check and copy files or folders security information ie ACL permissions on NTFS partitions and files and folders attributes ie hidden, system, archive, etc.

You can synchronize and transfer data across local or network drives ; each time existing files are modified in original folders or on newer files creation, Idem detects changes and will copy or dispatch them into destination folders according your setup parameters. Used as a desktop interactive program or as a Windows service, the software supports Windows, Unicode and Macintosh filenames with its peculiar structures served on a Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP server running MacFile/SFM (Services For Macintosh).

Idem synchronizing SW distributes and secures critical data duplicating it from a master computer location to another. Used to create a data mirror for disaster recovery or to backup files, move files, data migration throughout your computers (workstation, laptop, servers), safely synchronize directories. You can use Idem to synchronize laptop data on a network and for real-time mirroring of folders on ZIP drive, CD-RW, removable hard disk, USB Key, network drives, local hard disk.

PCs should be regularly backed up to disk or external storage devices : Idem will maintain copies of original files on a server so that those files will routinely be saved with server backups.
Designed also to operate  between a Windows NT and a Linux PC with WinNT emulator or to propagate / distribute documents and file changes from a master computer or location to other connected machine drives in a push/pull method.

Idem is distinguishable from other mirroring or clustering products by its ability to fully preserve Macintosh filenames and structures when stored on a Windows NT/2000/XP server. This software solution for synchronizing important folders across network drives or simply maintain backups is fully automated and designed to operate also on Windows Servers as a Windows NT/2000/XP service or in command line mode for batch processing.

A system administrator can also set up Idem for synchronization between two or many shared drives, periodically keep copies of a folder structure on another Windows 2000 server for example or set up an automatic move of files placed by users in a source folder where they have rights to do it and to be transferred by Idem admin account into a target network protected folders area not accessible to end users. A great help for professionals who work with multiple versions of files or who need to keep multiple folder hierarchies in sync. Everyone who maintains multiple copies of files or folders can benefit from Idem.

Main Features

Idem replication / move files software provides an easy definition of source and target folders to synchronize files and clone folders:

- with browse mode interface and settings of various parameters for synchronization.
- Support UNC (Universal Naming Convention) allows to name folders using paths as \\Server\Share\Folder
- Option to synchronize sub-folders,  sub-directory trees between drives in mirroring tasks: sync folder hierarchies.

Each backup/synchronization can run using one of the following modes:
- update if the file is different in the source and target folders
- update if the file in the source folder is newer than the corresponding file in the target folder. This possibility is used for dual way mirroring.

You can customize the time interval for scanning and update/propagate recent changed files. Each folder can be mirrored using its specific interval for update.
Performance setting can be adjusted.
Option to remove old files and subfolders from target folders when they no longer exist in source location.
Option to move files from a source folder toward a target destination, i.e. delete files from source folder after mirroring: the new files will be transferred to the destination drive/folders.
Allows as many source-target folder selections as needed (local or networked drives) to manage file updates in multiple locations and distribute files across network.

Idem can check and copy files and folders security information (ACL permissions - access-control lists on NTFS partitions) and files and folders attributes (hidden, system, archive, etc.) during file synchronization tasks; you will copy data with access rights. Automatically copy ntfs files and folders to another drive

Backup operationsfully preserves Macintosh filenames and specific structures stored on a Windows NT 4.0 / Windows 2000 /XP server volume during  synchronizing running MacFile/SFM (Services For Macintosh) or a MacFile/SFM compatible server as MacServerIP - an integration software.

Macintosh files are stored with peculiar data structure ("data fork", "resource fork", "Finder information") and their names can include forbidden Windows characters (like \, /, <, >, etc.). Idem can manage and keep these peculiarities.
Note : Requires Windows NT 4.0 - running MacFile/SFM or compatible - on NTFS partitions ; this feature of course is not implemented on Windows 95/98.

Option to rename moved Macintosh files, substituting a dash to the forbidden Windows characters in their names (/, \, <, >, etc.). Moreover, the 3 characters extension is added for the most commonly used applications: .doc, .qxd, .xls, .ppt, etc. For example, an XPress document named Advert 08/12/99 is moved as Advert 08-12-99.qxd.
All Windows programs will be able to manage these files after using Idem renaming feature. This option is appreciated for programs like Adobe Distiller running in Windows environment with Macintosh files.

Idem offers compatibility with :

Open File Handler (Swat Consulting Inc.) in order to mirror opened files on Windows NT.
-  WebDrive (RiverFront). In association with WebDrive, Idem allows to replicate files using FTP protocol (in order to update mirror Web sites for example).

A daily Log report lets you keep track of files processed during mirroring operations
When a folder becomes unknown (folder removed or renamed, lack a connection with a file server...), Idem can send different kind of warnings and alert error messages: beep, display message, send a message to an administrator, messages in diary Log, messages in the Applications EventLog (when Idem is running as a Windows NT or Windows 2000 or Windows XP service).

Synchronize directories running it as a Windows replication application and  as a Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP Service to be integrated in network administration automated backup processing.

If you have a specific log folder with distinct daily log files, you can use Idem to periodically archive / move them automatically from current log folders to archive folders.

Automate copy of files to network.

Screen Shot :

Idem Main Screen - For each folder you can click on the small clock named set in order to: set the time between two mirroring operations, choose the update mode, configure your synchonisation, software in English, logiciel en Français, programa em Português

Other advantages when using Idem to secure Macintosh files stored on a Windows NT/2000/XP servers:

- avoid a Macintosh replication task which is often executed on a dedicated Mac machine.
- reduce network overhead.
- increase speed of mirroring.
- automatic start-up at server boot.

Synchronize a laptop: the command line flag -u

When you run the program with the command line flag -u [for unknown], Idem stops if any defined folder is unknown. This will help when you are using Idem to synchronize a laptop on a network since Idem is only loaded and running when the laptop is connected to the network.

Installation and customer support:

The software delivered as a compressed file includes a setup procedure to guide you during installation; we provide email support and help available through the program interface menu in English, French, Portuguese according to current language used. At any moment to can switch from one language to another.

Using Idem menus:

Online help for detailed instructions to work with Idem (F1)

Create target folders using Windows Explorer. Idem uses existing source and target folders.
Idem uses logical drives (letters C:, D:, E:, etc.) or UNC (Universal Naming Convention) names as \\Server\Share\Folder. Examples:
- for secure a folder C:\My Data on Server 1 toward a folder D:\My Data on Server 2, Server 2 must be connected to Server 1 using D: as a drive letter.
- secure a folder \\Server1\Share\My data on \\Server2\Share\My data.

Install Idem.
Choose language using the Language menu (French, English, Portuguese).
If you want to mirror two equivalent folders structures on two different servers, define the Default drive/UNC prefix for target folders in the Configuration menu. Examples:
- if D: is the default drive for target folders, adding C:\My Data as a source folder will add automatically D:\My Data as the corresponding target folder.
- if \\Server2\Share is the default UNC prefix for target folders, adding \\Server1\Share\My data as a source folder will add automatically \\Server2\Share\My data as the corresponding target folder.

Define the list of source folders using the Add button down left.
The corresponding target folder is automatically defined if you have set the default drive or UNC prefix for target folders (cf. supra).
Invalid folder names are preceded by three interrogation marks.
Macintosh folders are preceded by a Mac icon.

For each folder you can click on the small clock named set in order to :
- define the time between two mirroring operations for the given folder using a multiple of the default time. The default time is set in the menu Configuration/Set default time between two mirroring operations. For example, if the default time is 10 seconds, you can set the time between two mirrorings of the considered folder to 10, 20, 30, etc. seconds.
- move file from the source folder toward the target folder. Files are deleted from the source folder after each mirroring operation.
- rename moved Macintosh files substituting a dash to the characters /, \, <, >, etc. in their names.
- delete old files in the target folders: the files in the target folder which have not corresponding source files are removed.

Choose one of the following update modes:
1. update if the file is different in the source and target folders
2. update if the file in the source folder is newer than the corresponding file in the target folder

To modify a folder name, select it and click on the Modify button (source or target), or double-click on the folder name.
To remove couples of folders (source and target) from the mirroring list, select them and click on the Remove button.

To start mirroring, click on the central button with arrow or choose the File/Start mirroring menu.
To stop mirroring, click on the same central button (Stop) or choose the File/Stop mirroring menu.
The minimized Idem window is invisible in the Task Bar and the status of the program is shown in the Task Notification Area (TNA: the small area in the Task Bar where Windows displays time).
Double left click on the Idem icon in TNA displays its window again; rigth click allows Start/Stop mirroring and exiting the program.
