Overview
Automation compression tool companion of WinRar that will periodically scan source folders where you put down files, compressing them with normalized filenames like RA0000001.rar to a target folder waiting for transfer. Then after transfer in reception location it uncompress restoring Macintosh structures, filenames and Windows 2000 files with streams, properties (Title, Subject, Comments, Keywords, etc.).
Compressed files keep their data fork, resource fork and Finder information when you send them by email or ftp and uncompress using the software.
Distinguishable from other compression solutions by its ability to fully preserve NTFS alternate streams, when packing files with all their components and restoring all components on receive destination.
This feature provides automatic compression/uncompression for Macintosh files stored on NT/2000/XP volumes preserving their filenames and peculiar structures - it means for example that you can use Rarissimo to send and receive Macintosh files using any standard FTP process (and not only Mac-based programs).

Why Rarissimo?
As you know, if you move a file from a NTFS partition toward a Fat drive or via email, then Windows 2000 file properties will be lost because for example Fat storage format does not supports streams. With Rarissimo you can move the compressed file format to a transit Fat drive and then to a final NTFS machine drive where you will uncompress it and recover your files with all related information (Data, Streams, properties, NTFS properties, Mac Structures)
Rarissimo runs on Windows 95/98/ME, NT 4.0 and Windows
2000/XP.
Warning: Preserving NTFS streams (and Macintosh
files structures) needs to run Rarissimo on Windows
NT4.0 or Windows 2000/XP; this feature is not available running on
Windows 95/98/Me.

Macintosh users put files to transmit in a network "hot" source folder. They can transmit files with their natural Mac names (i.e. characters like /, ?, *, etc. are allowed). Rarissimo running on NT box 1 checks continuously this predefined source folder and compress files in corresponding target folder.
Source folder 1 belongs to a Macintosh volume on NTFS drive (using standard Services for Macintosh or MacServerIP or ExtremeZIP) while target folder 1 is on NTFS or FAT drive. You can use many couples of source/target folders in order to send files to different destinations.
Files are compressed from source folders to target folders using Rarissimo's normalized filenames like RA0000001.rar, etc. A compressed file contains data fork, resource fork and Finder informations.
Rarissimo preserves also structures of Windows 2000 files with properties (Title, Subject, Comments, Keywords, etc.).
Compressed files are sent using any FTP application running on NT: CuteFTP , AutoFTP , etc.
Using WebDrive (for example), you can even map an FTP server running on NT box 2 as a drive on NT box 1 allowing Rarissimo running on NT box 1 to directly transmit compressed files via FTP to NT box 2.Rarissimo running on NT box 2 checks continuously reception folder and uncompress received files, restoring their Macintosh structures and filenames into target folder 2.
Download and install WinRar .
Download and install Rarissimo.

Compression (Rar): Rarissimo checks a list of source folders at regular time interval and updates target folders with corresponding compressed files. Files in source folders are deleted after their compression in target folders.
Uncompression (Unrar): Rarissimo checks a list of source folders containing compressed files at regular time interval and updates target folders with corresponding uncompressed files. Files in source folders must have been compressed using Rarissimo; they are deleted after their uncompression in target folders.
define the time between two operations for the given folder using a multiple of the default time. The default time is set in the menu Configuration/Set default time between two compress/uncompress operations. For example, if the default time is 10 seconds, you can set the time between two operations to 10, 20, 30, etc. seconds.
To modify a folder name, select it and click on Modify button (source or target), or double-click on the folder name.
To remove a couple of folders (source and target) from the list, select the line and click on Remove button.

XX is a two characters prefix and YYYYYY is a 6 digit number automatically attributed by Rarissimo. This allows to any FTP clients to transmit files respecting very simple 8.3 names. Changing the prefix (default is RA) can be useful when you want to use different Rarissimo applications on different servers sending files to another unique server.

Rarissimo stores log files and number of days to keep
logs.
You can use ckeck logs menu item to see the list of log files and open the last log file in a browser ( F1 key).
When a log file is displayed you can use the right mouse button on the systray Windows area to return to the main Window or to start operations.
The version you download is complete but needs a registration key to be fully operational.
Without this registration key, you can only define two couples of source/target folders and a warning message is displayed when a file has been compressed or uncompressed. Download Rarissimo here (2570 Kb)
